Kud is a scenic hillside resort far removed from the crowds and clutter associated with most tourist centres, and a popular transit town for Indian and foreign tourists visiting the holy shrines of Vaishno Devi and Amarnath, Jammu and Srinagar.
Favorably located in the cool temperate climes of the Lower Himalayas in the district of Udhampur, Kud is being modeled on European lines under the aegis of the Patnitop Development Authority. A Master Plan for the Kud-Patnitop-Sanasar zone and adjoining settlements has been drafted by Consulting Engineering Services (India), to develop critical infrastructure without disturbing the ecology.
Advantages of Kud
Enjoys parity with Kashmir Valley as a tourist destination
At an altitude of 1,738 metres, on the gentle slopes of the Lower Himalayas
Rejuvenating climate - pleasant weather throughout the summer months, ideal for treks, nature trails and adventure sports
Snow covered hillsides offer opportunities for winter sports
The Master Plan provides for strengthening the civic and tourism infrastructure and augmenting facilities for adventure sports and pilgrim tourism.
Potential sites have already been defined for star hotels and motels, tourist villas, amusement parks, golf course, yoga centre, food processing centre, craft bazaar and commercial complexes in the Patnitop-Sanasar-Mantalai-Kud-Pichote-Karlah circuit.
Accessible by NH1 from Jammu and Udhampur, Kud has a Mall Road under construction under the supervision of the PDA. Along this arterial road, commercial and residential complexes are planned, with provision for gardens and amusement parks.
Approval for a cable car project between Kud and Patnitop has also been obtained from the Chief Minister. 2nd phase of project may see the cable car extended to Sanasar.
Trek route between Kud to Patnitop-Sanasar is completed
Tourist bungalows and huts in Patnitop maintained by J&K Tourism
Accommodation for skiers in JKTDC in Patnitop, Kud and Sanasar
 Skiing zone in Madhatop
Hill slopes traversed by mineral water springs
Frequented by picnickers from the Headquarters of the Northern Command in Udhampur
Culturally rich, home to the Dogra community
Heavy highway traffic between Jammu and Srinagar
Railway tracks between Udhampur and Katra are being laid, and pilgrim traffic from Katra to Kud is bound to increase
National Power Projects are under construction in areas around Kud
As per Article 370 of the Indian Constitution which grants special status to the State of Jammu and Kashmir, the state's residents are governed by a separate set of laws, including those related to ownership of property. Though the laws do not permit purchase of property by a non-state subject, the Government does allow a businessman to take up a property on a 99 year lease.
Places of Interest around Kud
Patnitop:
2024 metres above sea level, and within a driving distance of 5 -10 minutes from the periphery of Kud, Patnitop has emerged as a very popular alternative to the Kashmir Valley as a tourist destination . The pine woods on the Patnitop plateau are popular amongst trekkers and picnickers in summer, while the snow-laden slopes are sought by sports enthusiasts in winter.
Sanasar:
Enjoys the status of a "mini-Gulmarg", and its unique cup-shaped topography is fringed by towering coniferous trees. At an altitude of 2079 metres and 23 kms from Kud, Sanasar is the perfect locale for meditation and reflection.
Nag Mandir:
A short 2 km distance from Patnitop, the 800 year old Nag Mandir, known for fulfilling the wishes of devotees, attracts pilgrims throughout the year.
Sudh Mahadev:
The holy environs of Sudh Mahadev are known to have been the seat of meditation for Goddess Parvati to attain Lord Shiva. The Shiv temple enshrines the three pieces of the "Holy Trishul" used by Lord Shiva to protect Goddess Parvati from the demon Sudhanshu, and is a subject of interest and research amongst pilgrims and historians.
Adding to the aura around the Shiv temple is the mystical volume of ash in the Agni Kund, which remains constant in spite of the regular burning of firewood by the temple priests over the years. Similarly, the water level in the "Water Kund" has also remained static in spite of the regular offering by devotees over the "lingam"
Located on the banks of the holy river Devak, the unique carvings of Lord Shiva and Parvati add to the fervour, mystique and devotion at the shrine.
Mantalai:
7 kms ahead of Sudh Mahadev, the late Swami Dhirendra Brahmachari selected Mantalai as the location for his world-class resort which compares with resorts in Switzerland. The cool environs of the thick temperate forests at 1700 metres above sea level are invigorating and vitalizing.
